Heartwarming moments on Heartbreak Hill

For many racers, built up nerves are shattered by the crack of the starting gun. Or, the monumental moment is felt when their foot crosses the finish line—hands rising into the air in celebration for the months of preparation finally paid off.
However, runners of the annual Boston Marathon would credit their most pivotal moment to the 21 mile marker—the infamous Heartbreak Hill.
The last in a series of hills along Newton’s rolling path, Heartbreak Hill is by far the steepest at a 3.3 percent grade. The 4 distinct knolls start 17 miles into the race and persist for four excruciating miles of varying incline.
These images were captured at the climax of the hill and the race. At the crest, the skyline of Boston comes into view and it’s all downhill from there—literally.

BOSTON—The sun was out on Marathon Monday, breaking 70 degrees for the first time this spring as Sisay Lemma broke the tape at 2:06:17—The first finisher of 2024.
30,000 runners filled the Boston streets this weekend—their families and friends tagging along to cheer them on from the sidelines. Along the 26.2 mile course, the best place to view the race was the heartbreaking halfway point.
